About the TCPJ Conferences

Texas College of Probate Judges

TCPJ provides a number of training sessions each year that are designed to provide probate court judges, their staff, and probate clerks with the material they need to operate effectively and efficiently. Each session is designed to review current law and practices of the probate courts throughout Texas in an effort to create a smooth process for those involved with the courts, consistent with the requirements of Texas law.

TCPJ’s goal is to have three training sessions each year held in different locations across Texas—one annual meeting, typically held later in the year, and two regional workshops earlier in the year. We encourage you to attend as many of these programs as possible. You may also wish to have your staff members attend as well. We have chosen the locations of the meetings with after hours fun in mind, whether you come alone or with family and friends.

Upcoming 2024 TCPJ conferences include:

March Regional Workshop: March 14-15, 2024, Austin

May Regional Workshop: May 23-24, 2024, Corpus Christi

August Annual Meeting: August 29-30, 2024, San Antonio

The Menger Hotel is one of the oldest, best known hotels in the state of Texas. On February 1, 1859, the hotel was opened by William Menger, and was constructed on the site of Texas’ first brewery, Menger’s brewery. When the Civil War and Reconstruction ended, and following the 1877 arrival of the railroad, the Menger Hotel quickly became the best-known hotel west of the Mississippi River. Praised for the cuisine offered in the Colonial Dining Room, the Menger hosted such notables as Sam Houston, Generals Lee and Grant, thirteen different presidents, Babe Ruth, Mae West, Sarah Bernhardt, and Bob Dylan. In 1898, Colonel Leonard Wood and his lieutenant-colonel (and future president of the United States), Theodore Roosevelt, set up an enlistment table at the Menger Bar where they recruited over 1,250 men to form the Rough Riders, the most popular volunteer regiment in the history of the world. William Menger died at the hotel in 1871, and the hotel is said to be home to as many as 43 resident ghosts!
